Save Our Ships New York is a New York State chartered not-for-profit organization which is qualified under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Service code. Its purposes under the Charter are"
To own, lease, or charter historic vessels, wharves, floats, piers, related equipment and support vessels.
To collect, own and hold artifacts relating to historic vessels and maritime history.
To restore, renovate and preserve historic vessels, wharves, floats, piers and support vessels.
To accept and hold easements on historic vessels, wharves, floats, piers and support vessels for purposes of preservation.
To provide expert advice and preservation services to owners of historic vessels.
To educate the public, and particularly citizens of New York City and surrounding areas, on the importance of historic vessels, piers and waterfront uses of New York City and New York State's waterfronts.
To offer programs to the public, sponsor trips on vessels and dock-side tours, issue publications and offer categories of membership.
Save Our Ships New York holds an irrevocable, permanent historic easement on John J. Harvey to insure that her historic integrity is maintained in perpetuity.

Currently, the organization's efforts are devoted to (a) restoration of John J. Harvey and (b) free public programming on the vessel. All funds raised go to the support of John J. Harvey.
