Waterfront Alliance honors Michael Stamatis for his decades of service to the maritime industry, local communities, his employees, and the many nonprofits that he supports as a leader. From humble beginnings as a dock laborer handling breakbulk bananas in Port Newark, Mike has become one of the most consequential maritime leaders in the United States, setting the standard for partnership with government and community groups, safety standards for his employees, and governmental affairs. As owner of Red Hook Terminals, operating in New Jersey, New York, across the country, Mike is responsible for a complex and diverse range of cargo, including containers, dry bulk, steel, breakbulk lumber, heavy lifts, automobiles, and refrigerated perishable commodities.

His kindness and forward thinking has been key in arranging complex, multi-stakeholder projects such as cross-harbor barge services, on-dock U.S. Customs cargo exam facilities, and the reactivation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, transforming it into a hub for industrial maritime activity. The last created hundreds of jobs and promoted green infrastructure, and led to partnering with Equinor to develop it into one of the largest offshore wind port facilities in the nation, supporting New York State and City’s transition to clean energy.

Mike was instrumental during Hurricane Sandy and the Pandemic supporting local communities in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and elsewhere with fresh food for those who had lost their jobs and livelihoods, setting the standard for how local industry can support communities during times of crisis.  In addition, Mike was the first operator in the New York-New Jersey region to electrify his operational fleet and commit to greenhouse gas reductions at his facilities.  Mike has been called a Renaissance man, ahead of his time, pointing the way for a new kind of corporate leadership in a changing world.

Waterfront Alliance honors the Battery Park City Resiliency projects. Three projects, delivered at a massive scale, represent the best in resilient and responsible design and will protect thousands of homes and some of Lower Manhattan’s most beloved spaces from future storms. The Battery Park City Ball Fields & Community Center Resiliency Project, South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, and North/West Battery Park City Resiliency Project together represent one of the largest-ever investments in coastal protection in the country. Now completed, the South project elevates and protects Wagner Park and was Battery Park City’s first project to earn WEDG® (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines) Verification. The Ball Fields project finished in 2021, and the North/West project has now entered construction. Together, these will complete Battery Park City Authority’s contribution to the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resilience Plan. We honor these projects for the level of protection they provide to New Yorkers, their commitment to creating incredible public spaces, their integration of nature into the design, and their responsiveness to the community.
