Marine Debris Threatens Our Waterfronts and Communities

New York City’s 520 miles of coastline are home to diverse ecosystems, recreational spaces, and critical infrastructure. But these waterfronts are under constant threat from marine debris, particularly plastics, which make up over 80% of ocean litter globally.

Trash accumulates along shorelines due to stormwater runoff, illegal dumping, and inadequate waste management. This debris:

• Harms wildlife, including fish, birds, and marine mammals that ingest or become entangled in plastic
• Pollutes water sources, degrading water quality and threatening public health
• Exacerbates flooding, as litter clogs storm drains and natural waterways
• Disproportionately impacts frontline communities, where access to clean, safe waterfronts is already limited

Without regular stewardship and public engagement, these problems compound – undermining climate resilience, environmental justice, and the health of our coastal ecosystems.

Our Approach

Community-Led Cleanups That Build Resilience

Waterfront Alliance’s Coastal Cleanup Program is a hands-on initiative that brings together volunteers, educators, and community partners to restore and protect New York’s waterfronts. These cleanups are designed to be educational, inclusive, and impactful.

Each event includes:

• Trash removal from beaches, parks, and shoreline habitats
• Guided ecology tours led by Waterfront Alliance educators
• Recreational activities like kayaking or canoeing (when available)
• All materials provided, including gloves, bags, grabbers, water, and sunscreen

Cleanups are often held in partnership with local schools, faith institutions, and community organizations – especially in neighborhoods vulnerable to flooding and pollution. Volunteers learn about:

• The connection between litter and climate resilience
• How marine debris affects biodiversity and water quality
• Ways to advocate for cleaner, more accessible waterfronts

These events also serve as a gateway to deeper engagement, connecting participants to Waterfront Alliance’s broader initiatives in climate education, policy advocacy, and community planning.
